CBT for anxiety

CBT for anxiety


Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) as the most effective way to treat many problems. Many studies have demonstrated that CBT is as effective as medication for many common mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. Research has shown it to be effective in the treatment of panic disorder, phobias, social anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder (excessive worry), among many other conditions.


CBT for anxiety


CBT therapy works on the belief that people's emotional reactions and behavioural responses are strongly influenced by the way they think. In other words our thoughts, beliefs and interpretations of ourselves, others or the world gives meaning to the situation we find ourselves in. If we are suffering from anxiety or depression we are much more likely to interpret things as dangerous or hopeless. CBT addresses negative patterns of behaviour and distorted beliefs we hold about ourselves and the world. This involves two main components:

  1. The cognitive work examines how negative thoughts, or cognitions, contribute to anxiety.

  2. The behavior work examines how we behave and react in situations that trigger anxiety.
